K-P initiates helpline to combat abuse

PESHAWAR:

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) is taking significant strides towards combating domestic violence with the imminent establishment of a dedicated helpline, announced Mashal Azam Yousafzai, Advisor to the Chief Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment.

This initiative, set to operate round the clock, aims to provide vital support to women facing domestic abuse – an issue exacerbated by gender discrimination and early marriages.

Addressing the 22nd Inter-Provincial Ministerial Group meeting, Yousafzai emphasized the pressing need to address the multifaceted challenges confronting women.

Despite advocating for gender equality, she lamented the lack of opportunities afforded to women in the region. “We will empower our sisters and daughters,” she affirmed, underscoring her commitment to advancing women’s rights and empowerment within the province.

The meeting, attended by prominent figures including Chairperson National Commission on Status of Women, Nilofar Bakhtiar, and Provincial Ombudsman for Protection against Harassment at Workplace, Rukhshanda Naz, saw a unanimous resolution passed. Among its key demands were increased women’s representation in federal and provincial cabinets, enhanced participation in decision-making processes, and the expeditious implementation of legislation addressing child marriage.

Yousafzai reiterated her pledge to expedite the appointment of the Chairperson of K-P Commission on Status of Women, stressing the importance of collective efforts in achieving meaningful progress. She also commended the support provided by UN Women and pledged further collaboration to advance women’s rights.

The proposed draft of the Child Marriage Bill was presented during the meeting, highlighting the government’s proactive stance on curbing harmful practices. Yousafzai reaffirmed her commitment to swift legislative action in this regard.
